NA Vice Chairman meets IPU President, Lao counterpart
VOV.VN - Tran Thanh Man, permanent vice chairman of the National Assembly (NA), met with Duarte Pacheco, president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and received his Laotian counterpart Sounthone Xayachak on March 12 on the sidelines of the 146th IPU Assembly in Manama, Bahrain.
During the meeting with Pacheco, Man affirmed that since becoming a member of the IPU back in 1979 the Vietnamese NA has always actively and responsibly participated in activities of the group, including the successful organisation of a number of major events such as the 132nd IPU Assembly and the IPU Asia-Pacific conference on climate change response.
Man went on to emphasise that the country’s hosting of the upcoming Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians once again affirms Vietnamese interest in the role of young people in dealing with global common issues of today's youth.
He hailed the role of the IPU leadership over recent times, highlighting the many practical activities which support the implementation of the union's programmes and strategies, as well as strengthening the co-operative relations with member parliaments towards the common goals of peace, democracy, and prosperity.
The Vietnamese NA has always determined that engaging in IPU activities is an important multilateral diplomatic task of the legislative body in order to contribute to general discussions and find solutions to today's pressing global problems.
The IPU forum is also a place where the Vietnamese legislature can gain access to a lot of content, experience, and good practices of parliaments around the world to improve the overall quality of its activities, he went on to say.
For his part, Pacheco said that the IPU and the Vietnamese NA share common values of a better world.
The union continues to define dialogue as an effective tool used to narrow differences and settle crises and conflicts, he said, expressing his sincere hope that the parliaments of all UN member states will become members of the IPU in the future.
The IPU leader welcomed the Vietnamese NA’s hosting of the ninth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Hanoi next September, while affirming that he would work closely alongside relevant units of the Union in a bid to ensure the success of the event.
He expressed his confidence that the country will continue to be a responsible member, thereby contributing to valuable ideas as well as staying ready to hold important positions at IPU in the near future.
At a meeting held with Xayachak in his role as vice president of the Laos NA on the same day, Man affirmed that Vietnam always places the highest priority on consolidating and enhancing the traditional friendship, special solidarity, and all-around co-operation with Laos.
The nation always stands by and strongly supports the neighbouring country’s national protection, construction, reform, and development.
Regarding the relationship that exists between the two legislatures, Man showed his elation at the effective implementation of the co-operation agreement signed in May, 2022.
The two sides have actively shared experience in law building and supervision, thereby contributing to supporting the post-pandemic economic recovery, he noted, suggesting that both sides continue to work together in realizing their co-operation agreement, while promoting the mechanism of high-level meeting of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam (CLV)’s parliaments. This is in addition to collaborating in supervising the implementation of international conventions that the two sides have signed, especially those on trade and investment, thereby strengthening the connectivity between the two economies.
Xayachak also greatly valued the outcomes of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Year 2022, as well as the partnership between the two legislatures at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums over the years. He agreed with his Vietnamese counterpart on the enhancement of ties in supervising bilateral investment and co-operation projects, citing this as a factor in removing obstacles facing them and enhancing bilateral ties.
He went on to express his hope at collaboration between Vietnam and Cambodia to hold the first meeting of the CLV’s NA leaders in December.
He also asked for the Vietnamese NA’s support for the Laotian NA to complete its tasks as the AIPA Chair in 2024.
