Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Sinh Hung on January 16 received UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pratibha Mehta in Hanoi.

The NA leader appreciated the UN’s activities in Vietnam, which he said have helped Vietnam in its socio-economic development. He said he believes the Coordinator will be able to boost cooperation between Vietnam and UN agencies.

Mr Hung also briefed Ms Mehta on Vietnam’s socio-economic situation, saying that despite the global economic downturn, the country has made great efforts to maintain high economic growth, control inflation, implement international commitments, and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

Vietnam’s NA is strengthening its supervision of key national projects, boosting cooperation with parliaments around the world, and accelerating the completion of its legal system to facilitate the country’s global integration, said Mr Hung.

Ms Mehta said she is pleased with the close and effective cooperation between Vietnam and the UN. She spoke highly of Vietnam’s achievements in maintaining high economic growth, stabilising its macroeconomy, and achieving the MDGs.

She also said that UN agencies are willing to assist Vietnam with poverty reduction and amending its 1992 Constitution.
