A Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) delegation led by NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu paid a working visit to the US and Canada from March 12-16 to exchange experiences in legislation and supervision.

In Washington, the delegation worked with Senator Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary; Senator Thad Cochran, Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee; the Congressional Research Service (CRS); and the Executive Director of the Mike Mansfield Foundation.

It also met with scholars from the American University and Johns Hopkins University, representatives from some law companies, and the director of a capacity building programme under the World Bank.

In Ottawa, the delegation met with Speaker of the House of Commons Andrew Scheer, Senators Terry Mercer and Mac Harb, members of parliament Gordon Brown and Patrick Brown, scholars, lawyers and lecturers from the Ottawa University and overseas Vietnamese in Canada.

At these meetings, partners from the two countries acknowledged the importance of developing relations with Vietnam and agreed to boost economic, trade and investment cooperation.

They also highlighted the need to promote the exchange of visits and share experiences in legislation and supervision.

The Vietnamese delegation was also briefed on the political system, constitutions, laws, and the role and function of the legislative body of each nation.

NA Vice Chairman Luu informed US and Canadian partners about Vietnam’s external policy and discussed measures to enhance relations between the Vietnamese NA and the two legislative bodies, as well as to promote mutual understanding.
