Many National Assembly deputies at the March 26 debate session pointed out the need to develop a market economic institution, saying it must be considered as a key task for the Government during its coming term.

Discussing the Prime Minister's report on the Government's performance in the 2002-2007 term, the NA deputies asked the Government to pay attention to building a market economy, and make the best use of advantages the country enjoys from being a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to develop strong economic regions.

Some NA deputies suggested that the Government give more support to the agricultural sector, which is still fragmented, and casually developed, particularly in such commodities as fisheries, coffee and fruit. According to them, the sector needs further investment in irrigation works and productivity improvement.

NA deputies said the Government's dynamic and decisive performance has helped bring economic achievements during the past term. However, the Government is required to address shortcomings in administrative reform, fighting corruption and wastefulness, and give priorities to investment.

They asked the Government to consider ODA distribution to remote regions that are in need of large investment in infrastructure construction.

Earlier, in the morning, the NA discussed the State President's report on performance in the 2002-2007 term.

On March 27, the legislative body discussed reports presented by the Chief Judge of the Supreme People's Court and the Director of the Supreme People's Procuracy.
