A delegation from the Vietnamese National Assembly led by its Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu visited Australia from June 23-26.

At a working session with Mr Luu, Australia’s Senate President John Hogg praised the partnership agreement signed by the Vietnamese NA and the Australian House of Representatives during NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Australia in March 2008. The Senate President proposed that the Vietnamese NA expand upon the agreement with the Senate in the future.

Mr Luu also worked with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Bruce Scott and other committees of both houses. During these meetings, the Australian representatives briefed the Vietnamese delegation on the Australian general election with Julia Gillard elected new Prime Minister. Both sides highlighted recent developments in the Vietnam-Australia relationship as well as cooperation between the two legislative bodies, especially after the two countries established a comprehensive partnership during Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh’s visit to Australia in September 2009.

They also touched upon some issues related to legislation, parliament supervision, judicial and executive activities, judicial reforms, and prevention work against corruption and crime in Australia. They also discussed the functions, tasks, and authority of legislative bodies.

In Sydney, the delegation held a working session with the Australian Law Reform Commission and the Independent Commission against Corruption (ICAC) in New South Wales. Later, the delegation visited the Vietnamese embassy in Canberra.
