Speaking at a Vietnam-Cambodia Parliamentary Friendship meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on August 23, NA Chairman Hung said the meeting also offered a good opportunity for Vietnam and Cambodia to review the traditional relationship throughout history.

For his part, Cambodian NA Chairman Heng Samrin expressed his delight at the close-knit ties, traditional friendship, and effective cooperation across all fields between the two nations.

Cambodia always considers Vietnam its good neighbour, friend, comrade, and partner, he said.

The top Cambodian legislator also thanked the Vietnamese Party, government and people for their great assistance, especially the sacrifices made by volunteer Vietnamese soldiers in the past struggle against Pol Pot’s genocidal regime.

Cambodian people will always bear Vietnam’s good service in mind, Heng Samrin said.

He then added that Cambodia welcomed efforts to successfully implement treaties, conventions, and agreements signed by both governments, especially those related to boosting socio-economic development, investment, trade and tourism.

He proposed Cambodia and Vietnam further promote cooperation in culture, education, sports, science-technology, health care and human resource training, as well as in energy and infrastructure development.

Heng Samrin said he hopes both countries will fulfill border demarcation plans this year, build a border line of peace, friendship, cooperation and sustainable development.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the traditional solidarity is an invaluable asset for Vietnam and Cambodia, not only for the present generation but also for their descendants. He said the meeting will contribute to reinforcing the traditional relations as well as comprehensive cooperation between the two legislative bodies and the two countries .

After the opening ceremony, participants discussed the time-honoured relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia, during  their past struggles for national independence as well as the current process of national development.

In the current global and regional context, Vietnamese and Cambodian people, especially young people, should be fully aware of the need to consolidate the relationship and solidarity in their interests and for the sake of peace and security in the region and the world as a whole, they said.
