NA Chairman calls for stronger Vietnam-Greece cooperation, seeks support for EVIPA ratification

VOV.VN - National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with First Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis at the National Assembly House on March 2 during the latter’s official visit to Vietnam from February 28 to March 5.

The top Vietnamese legislator warmly welcomed Plakiotakis and his delegation, noting that the visit followed NA Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai’s trip to Greece in October 2025. He said the visit was significant and reflected the deep interest of the Greek Parliament and people in the traditional friendship and all-around cooperation between the two countries.

Hailing Greece’s recent socio-economic achievements, Man affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to and wishes to further deepen traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Greece.

Both sides still hold huge potential to expand collaboration in areas of mutual strength and complementary needs, including maritime economy, shipping, logistics, renewable energy, digital transformation, green transition and innovation, Man told his guest.

To further promote relations between the two countries and their legislatures, the NA leader proposed strengthening political trust and expanding multifaceted cooperation through increased exchanges at various levels and channels, sharing experience in legislation and oversight, and enhancing coordination at multilateral forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP).

He called for greater emphasis on the economic pillar of cooperation, particularly in maritime affairs and agriculture, and suggested that the Greek Parliament support efforts by European countries to soon ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). He also suggested that Greece support efforts for the European Commission to soon lift the IUU “yellow card” imposed on Vietnamese seafood exports.

Ioannis Plakiotakis thanked his host for the reception and expressed his impression of Vietnam’s development. He highlighted the heroic historical traditions of the two countries and their shared values of peace and independence, while affirming Greece’s desire to augment cooperation through both parliamentary and governmental channels, including within the framework of the United Nations, where Greece serves as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

On this occasion, he conveyed greetings and an invitation to visit Greece from Hellenic Parliament President Nikitas Kaklamanis.

Sharing the assessments of the Vietnamese side, Plakiotakis agreed to intensify exchanges between specialized committees and young parliamentarians of the two legislatures, enhance the role of parliamentary friendship groups, and explore stronger economic cooperation in areas where Greece has strengths such as construction, energy and maritime affairs.

Both sides consented to continue close coordination and support for each other’s initiatives at multilateral and international forums, including ASEAN-EU cooperation and regional and global inter-parliamentary mechanisms.

They reaffirmed support for multilateralism and respect for international law, while underscoring the importance of settling disputes through peaceful and diplomatic means in accordance with international law, and ensuring security, safety and freedom of navigation in regional and global waters.
