During their recent meetings with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, the Pope and the Vatican Prime Minister highly valued Vietnam’s policy on religious freedom and the current religious situation in the country. The Vatican Prime Minister suggested that the Vatican and Vietnam establish diplomatic ties.

At a regular press briefing on February 1, the Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson Le Dung spoke of external-related activities in the coming period and answered reporters’ queries in this connection.


Spokesperson Le Dung said that during his tour of Europe Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met with Pope Benedict XVI and had talks with the Vatican Prime Minister. The meetings demonstrated the willingness of Vietnam and the Vatican to enhance dialogue and mutual understanding.


The Pope and the Vatican Prime Minister appreciated Vietnam’s policy on religious freedom and the current religious situation in the country. The Vatican Prime Minister suggested Vatican and Vietnam establish diplomatic ties. PM Dung welcomed the suggestion and asked the two foreign affairs agencies to facilitate preparatory work.
