A total 1.17 million euros will be spent fighting corruption in Vietnam under a cooperative project signed on October 29 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Commission and the Vietnamese Inspectorate.
The project aims to improve the effectiveness of the Vietnamese government and inspectorate in their efforts to combat corruption and conform to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
The project will focus on improving the government’s ability to monitor and assess anti-corruption efforts in line with international standards and rules.
Setsuko Yamazaki, UNDP Country Director for Vietnam, said that corruption has the greatest impact on poor people, who cannot pay bribes. Consequently, she said, corruption indirectly deprives the poor of their educational and medical rights.
