The fifth Mekong-Japan Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) opened in Hanoi on March 31, drawing the participation of delegates from Mekong countries (Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar) and Japan.

It was the first SOM following the first Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo in November last year.

The meeting focused on reviewing the results of the first Mekong-Japan Summit and discussed ways of implementing the Tokyo Joint Statement and 63- point action plan.

Japan introduced the initiative “Decade towards the Green Mekong” to build a sustainable development in the sub-Mekong region.

Vietnam elaborated on PM Nguyen Tan Dung’s two initiatives at the first Mekong-Japan Summit on vocational training and the management and effective use of water sources in the Mekong River.

This meeting acknowledged new trends in cooperation between the Mekong countries and Japan and agreed on specific measures to improve the mechanism for cooperation.

Delegates agreed to organise the third Ministerial Meeting and the second Mekong-Japan Summit on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings to be held in Vietnam this year.
