The Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association (VCFA) and the Cuban Embassy in Vietnam held a meeting in the northern province of Bac Ninh on April 17 to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the Giron Victory (April 19, 1961).

Attending the ceremony were Vice President of the VCFA Central Committee Nguyen Duy Cuong and the Political Counsellor of the Cuban Embassy to Vietnam, Paulo Fernandez Alberto.

Speaking at the event, Counsellor Alberto said that this is part of activities being held to mark the 50th anniversary of Cuba-Vietnam diplomatic ties.

On behalf of the Vietnamese side, Le Dinh Thanh, Chairman of the Thuan Thanh district People’s Committee, praised the great significance of the historic Giron Victory, which marked the first military defeat of the US Imperialism in America.

He affirmed that the people in Bac Ninh in particular and in Vietnam in general never forget the valuable support of the Cuban people for their country during the US-resistance war in the past as well as in the current national development.

At the end of the ceremony, the leader of Thuan Thanh district and the Cuban Political Counsellor planted a commemorative tree at the Memorial to late Vice State President Nguyen Thi Dinh in the school bearing her name.
