State President Nguyen Minh Triet has asked the Nhan Co Alumin Joint Stock Company and functional agencies to get real on the environmental cost of bauxite exploitation projects and seek measures to protect the environment.

While working with leaders of the Nhan Co Alumin JSC in the Central Highland province of Dak Nong on January 7, President Triet affirmed that the Party and State support projects to exploit natural resources to serve national development. Nhan Co is one of two pilot projects to exploit bauxite in the Central Highlands. It is essential to both implement and evaluate the projects in a cautious manner, he noted.

The State leader said that the Nhan Co aluminum project has a design capacity of 650,000 tonnes/year, and is likely to double its capacity in the future with a total investment capital of nearly VND12,000 billion. So far, the project has completed preparatory work to increase its capacity to 1.2 million tonnes/year in the near future.

At present, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has approved a report on evaluation of the bauxite exploitation projects’ impact on the environment. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade and Industry will also complete its evaluation on the economic effectiveness of the Nhan Co aluminum project.

President Triet emphasised that bauxite exploitation projects must yield economic benefits and ensure national defence and social welfare at the same time.

The same day, he also visited the Dak Rtich hydro-electric power plant in Dak Rlap district in Dak Nong province.
