Lunar New Year 2026 safe and festive nationwide: Government chief
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a government meeting in Hanoi on February 22 to review the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 (Tet) and set out key post-holiday tasks.
He assessed that the holiday was safe and festive across sectors. Traffic accidents declined in all three indicators-cases, fatalities and injuries. Hospital emergency wards did not experience the overcrowding seen in previous years, while Tet media coverage featured a range of programmes.
During the holiday, the health sector maintained duty rotations and monitored disease developments. No diphtheria cases were recorded.
A report presented at the meeting showed 1,431 new dengue cases and 955 new hand-foot-and-mouth cases nationwide. Medical facilities maintained round-the-clock emergency services and ensured adequate supplies of medicines, equipment and medical materials.
More than VND 3.7 trillion was allocated in Tet gifts for 6.2 million beneficiaries, particularly policy beneficiaries, low-income households and vulnerable groups. The average Tet bonus reached VND 8.69 million per person, up 13% from 2025. The highest bonus was VND 1.84 billion per person at a foreign-invested electronics enterprise in Ho Chi Minh City.
Markets remained stable, with no sudden price spikes. Construction continued at several major national projects throughout the break.
During the Tet holiday, 339 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide, resulting in 208 deaths and 235 injuries, a decline across all three indicators compared with the previous year. However, a waterway accident on Thac Ba Lake in Lao Cai province on February 21 left six people missing, and search operations are ongoing.
For 2026, PM Chinh called for macroeconomic stability, inflation control and faster public investment disbursement, while promoting digital and green transitions.
The State Bank of Vietnam is to manage monetary policy in a proactive and flexible manner, coordinate with other policies to safeguard macroeconomic stability, direct credit toward priority sectors, and both control inflation and promote growth. It is to closely monitor the gold market, particularly on the Day of the God of Wealth in the Lunar Year of the Horse 2026. Energy supply must be firmly ensured for production and business activities.
At the same time, the “Tet tree-planting” programme must be carried out in a substantive manner, with no symbolic planting; every tree planted must survive and grow.
The Government leader asked the Ministry of Health to strengthen healthcare services for the people; the Ministry of Education and Training to stabilise school operations after the Tet break, finalise the curriculum and textbooks, and improve foreign-language instruction.
The Ministry of Public Security is to continue efforts to reduce traffic accidents and intensify crackdowns on gambling, illegal street racing, theft and assaults on law enforcement officers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to further enhance the country’s standing and accelerate the implementation of signed agreements.
He urged the Vietnam Television (VTV), the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and other media outlets to step up coverage of the significance and outcomes of the 14th National Party Congress and ongoing tasks. Reporting must be full, timely, accurate and objective, thereby helping adding fresh impetus to achieving economic growth of 10% in 2026.
