Vietnam and Laos reviewed a programme to upgrade and reinforce the number of border markers along their common border in 2009 at a meeting in Vientiane on January 11.

The two countries identified 190 locations and installed 141 border markers. However, the results did not live up to both sides’ expectations due to unfavourable weather, especially the two powerful tropical storms.

At the meeting, the specialists agreed that in 2010 they will work harder to plant 237 markers and the remaining number of markers unfinished in 2009. They vowed to complete the work in the first half of 2010 to avoid the rainy season in the other half.

They also discussed preparations for the 19th annual conference on Vietnam-Laos border issues to be held in Vietnam in late February 2010.

Earlier, the construction of a large marker along their border started on January 10. The 1.6-metre granite marker No 476 will be located in the middle of a 380-sq-metre compound between the Cau Treo and Nam Phao border gates.
