Ireland appreciative of Vietnamese role and prestige in international arena

VOV.VN - Irish President Michael D. Higgins has expressed his appreciation for Vietnam's growing role and prestige in the region and around the world, especially its contribution to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment in the region, as well as the cohesion and centrality of ASEAN in numerous important issues.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK and Ireland Do Minh Hung presented the Letter of Credentials of President To Lam to Irish President Higgins on September 10 in the Irish capital of Dublin.

At a reception held for Ambassador Hung following the presentation of the letter of credence, the Irish President expressed a special respect towards the country and people of Vietnam, especially the indomitable and resilient spirit of the Vietnamese people that he has always admired.

He recalled the deep impressions both he and his wife had during their state visit to Vietnam back in 2016 and offered his profound condolences to the Party, Government, and people of Vietnam on the passing of the late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the respected leader whom he had the opportunity to meet during his visit.

The Irish President also sent his condolences for the great losses that the Vietnamese people are suffering due to the severe consequences of Typhoon Yagi, wishing that the Vietnamese Government and people continue to unite, be resilient, and swiftly overcome this difficult period.

President Higgins extended his congratulations to General Secretary and President To Lam on his new position and responsibilities, stating his belief that the Vietnam-Ireland relationship will continue to develop well moving forward, especially in the fields of education, agriculture, trade, climate change response, and people-to-people exchange.

The Irish President assessed that the two countries continue to boast huge potential to strengthen and develop co-operation in both bilateral relations and at international forums.

Ambassador Hung conveyed the regards and best wishes of Party General Secretary and President To Lam, as well as Party, National Assembly, and Government leaders of Vietnam to their Irish counterparts.

The Vietnamese diplomat thanked President Higgins and his wife for their positive sentiments towards the nation, while hailing the practical support of the Irish Government and people for the country in the fight against hunger, poverty reduction and sustainable development through development aid programmes. He expressed hopes that the two sides would continue to step up co-operation across multiple fields, focusing on education, research, science and technology, agriculture, and cultural exchanges.

Ambassador Hung expressed his honour at being appointed as Ambassador of Vietnam to Ireland and pledged to do his best to propel relations between the two countries forward in the time ahead.
