Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Uong Chu Luu on February 26 received Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) officials who have been in Vietnam to examine development aid projects.

He thanked foreign donors for providing more than US$23 billion in official development assistance (ODA) to Vietnam during the past five years, which has helped the country achieve an annual economic growth rate of 7.5 percent.

Despite the global economic recession, natural disasters and epidemics in 2009, he said Vietnam secured a GDP growth rate of 5.32 percent, stabilized its macro economy and ensured social security.

Mr Luu affirmed the National Assembly’s important role in formulating and finalising the legal system concerning ODA use and management, and deciding on national key projects. He said NA agencies have also taken part in overseeing ODA projects in localities to ensure the aid is used effectively and any violations are dealt with immediately.

IPU officials praised the Vietnam National Assembly’s increasing role, especially in legislation, and briefed Mr Luu on the result of their working sessions with relevant Vietnamese agencies.

They said after the visit they will ask the IPU to assist the Vietnam National Assembly to increase the capacity building of its deputies so that they will better perform their role in overseeing ODA projects.
