International newspapers have highlighted Vietnam’s remarkable developments 36 years after national reunification and over 25 years of renewal (Doi Moi).

Despite global financial crisis, Vietnam has maintained its high economic growth rate to become an average income nation and living conditions have improved significantly.

China’s Xinhua News Agency ran an article on the grand meeting to celebrate the Great Spring Victory in 1975 in HCM City, which was attended by State President Nguyen Minh Triet and other high-ranking Vietnamese officials. The article said that the victory opened up a new chapter in the history of Vietnam and quoted Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan as saying that Vietnam’s economic achievements, particularly in HCM City, have proven the historic significance of the April 30 victory in Vietnam.

The daily newspaper Ouest France said that many activities such as seminars, exhibitions, art and music performances, and film screenings were also held in Lorient, France to celebrate these historic events to help French people learn about the miracle of Vietnam.

In the Philippines’ Manila Times, journalist Isabel C.De Leon expressed her surprise at Ho Chi Minh City’s remarkable developments and her strong impression of Vietnam’s beautiful landscape. She learned about war victims when visiting the War Remnants Museum in HCM City.

The newspaper also ran articles on cooperation between Vietnam and the US, especially the improvement in Vietnam-US relations.

During his recent visit to Hanoi, US Senator Daniel Inouye also voiced his support for establishing a Vietnam-US Parliamentary Friendship Group to build trust and develop the relationship between the two countries.

Senator Inouye also said that both countries should expand bilateral ties in all fields and work together to resolve the consequences of the war.

An article on the website of the US Department of Defense also quoted US Navy Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as saying that the US’s failure in Vietnam can be attributed to the fact that American people did not support the war.

This should be a lesson for Washington in any future wars, it said.
