India is determined to further strengthen multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, especially in culture and education, affirmed Indian Lower House Chairwoman Meira Kumar during her Vietnam visit from May 14-17.
At a working session with Chairwoman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Council Ngo Thi Doan Thanh, Meira Kumar said that the Indian government and decided to build an Indian cultural centre, a foreign language centre and a super-computer centre in Hanoi as well as resuming a project to provide information technology training for Hanoi’s cadres.
Chairwoman Thanh spoke highly of India’s experience in national construction and development, particularly in developing a knowledge-based economy.
At present, Indian businesses are developing six projects in Hanoi with a total investment of US$5 million, she said, adding that this figure is yet to match the two countries’ potential for economic cooperation.
Thanh expressed her wish that through this visit, Chairwoman Meira Kumar and the Indian Lower House would further contribute to strengthening the relationship between the two nations, especially between Hanoi and New Delhi.
On May 17, the Indian Lower House Chairwoman was received by Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and standing member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, who expressed his wish that the two sides would further exchange visits of delegations at all levels to strengthen relations between the CPV and Indian political parties.
The two sides should speed up economic and trade ties to match their political relations, Mr Sang said.
He affirmed that Vietnam supports India’s bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council when the council is expanded, expressing his hope that India will excellently fulfil its tasks as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the 2011-2012 term.
Chairwoman Meira Kumar said that the Indian government and parliament will do their utmost, together with Vietnam, to develop the strategic partnership between the two countries more deeply, effectively and practically in the interest of the two peoples.
She affirmed that in its “Look East” policy, India always attaches importance to developing ties with ASEAN, especially Vietnam.
On the same day, the Indian Lower House delegation left Hanoi, concluding its four-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.
