Hoi An town in central Quang Nam province and Kiama City in Australia's New South Wales have agreed to strengthen cooperation, especially in economics, culture and education and some other potential areas.

The agreement was reached by leaders of the two cities in Kiama on August 10 during the Australia visit by a delegation coming from Hoi An.

On the occasion, the two sides reviewed their twin town agreement signed during the visit to Hoi An in November 2008 by a delegation from the Kiama Municipal Council, and discussed measures to boost cooperation, especially in the field of tourism.

During the talks, the Mayoress of Kiama, Dandra Mc Carthy emphasised the need to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between Hoi An and Kiama in the fields of tourism and trade. She added that Kiama plans to organize many cultural events and exchanges between the two cities in the future.

The same day, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Kiama Municipal Council and the 64th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, the Council and the Consulate General of Vietnam in Sydney held a ceremony to raise the Australian and Vietnamese national flags. The event will become an annual activity of both cities.

After the ceremony, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Sydney and the Hoi An delegation presented newspapers and books to Kiama’s library and attended an art performance by Vietnamese students.
