Hanoi Convention: Latin American media highlight Vietnam’s role and global standing
VOV.VN - Latin American media outlets in recent days have extensively reported on and praised the significance of the signing ceremony and high-level conference of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime recently held in Hanoi.
They described the event as a historic milestone in international cooperation to strengthen cybersecurity, while recognizing Vietnam’s credibility, reputation, and organizational capacity as host of this global gathering.
In an article titled “The UN calls for the protection of people in cyberspace,” Venezuela’s multilateral news network teleSUR stressed that Vietnam’s hosting of such a global event reflects its proactive role in promoting multilateralism and providing a practical platform for dialogue and cooperation among nations. The outlet also quoted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as saying Hanoi is the perfect place for this historic moment, underscoring the international community’s high regard for Vietnam’s growing stature and competence in organizing large-scale international events.
Meanwhile, the Spanish-language portal of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) noted that the signing ceremony in Hanoi brought together representatives from dozens of countries and territories, including several from Latin America such as Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
According to UNODC, hosting the event in Vietnam embodied the spirit of global solidarity and laid the groundwork for cross-border cooperation in collecting digital evidence, protecting users, and preventing cybercrime.
Mexico’s El Economista observed that the signing of the Hanoi Convention by numerous countries marked a major step toward establishing a common legal framework to bolster international co-operation against digital crimes — from online fraud and money laundering to child sexual exploitation on the internet. The paper cited experts as saying that selecting Hanoi as the venue sent a strong message of trust and recognition of Vietnam’s growing role in global affairs.
El Economista further wrote: “Every day, sophisticated scams destroy families, deprive migrants of their savings, and cause billions of dollars in losses to the global economy. We need a coordinated and powerful global response.” The call captured the spirit of the high-level conference in Hanoi, where Vietnam reaffirmed its position as a bridge for cooperation and as a symbol of a proactive, responsible, and trustworthy nation in the joint effort to safeguard global cybersecurity.
Latin American media also emphasized the Convention’s positive impact on the region, which is accelerating digital transformation while facing mounting risks of cross-border cybercrime. According to teleSUR, the participation of many Latin American countries in the signing ceremony in Hanoi showed their determination to strengthen legal frameworks, enhance international cooperation, and ensure a safe and equitable cyberspace for all citizens.
