Government chief meets President of Palau, Solomon Islands PM
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held bilateral meetings with President of Palau Surangel Whipps Jr. and Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands Jeremiah Manele on the sidelines of the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3) in Nice, France, on June 9.

At the meeting with President Whipps, PM Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s recognition of great importance to its relations with Pacific island nations, including Palau. He expressed hope to boost ties with Palau in a substantive, effective, and comprehensive manner across a variety of fields.
President Whipps noted that although the current relationship between the two countries remains modest, it holds huge potential, particularly in trade, investment, aviation connectivity, tourism, and labour cooperation.
Sharing a common approach of “long-term vision, deep thinking, and ambitious action” to promote a breakthrough in bilateral relations, the two sides agreed to task relevant agencies with exploring the possibility of negotiating and signing cooperation agreements in areas such as fisheries, labour, and visa exemptions for citizens of both countries. These efforts aim to facilitate stronger cooperation and enhance people-to-people exchange, they noted.
Both sides also pledged to increase coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums and on issues of shared concern. These include upholding and respecting international law, fostering relations between Vietnam, ASEAN, and Pacific island nations, and tackling challenges such as climate change, sea level rise, and the sustainable use and protection of marine resources.
At his meeting with Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele of the Solomon Islands , the first high-level contact between the two nations in years , PM Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s wish to deepen friendship and cooperation with Pacific island countries, including the Solomon Islands. He formally invited PM Manele to visit Vietnam at the earliest opportunity.
PM Manele expressed eagerness to visit Vietnam, calling it a remarkable country from which the Solomon Islands could gain valuable development insights as it works toward graduation from the category of least developed countries.

He highlighted Vietnam as an important market for trade and tourism and voiced support for strengthening people-to-people exchange and visa exemption for Vietnamese citizens. He also called on Vietnamese businesses to invest in the Solomon Islands, while pledging to provide favorable conditions for them.
On this occasion, he invited Vietnam to attend the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting, an annual summit which the Solomon Islands will host this year.
Both leaders consented to reinforce political and diplomatic ties through more delegation exchanges and to expand cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, investment, agriculture, aquaculture, education, and tourism, in order to promote mutual understanding and closer connections between the two peoples.
PM Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to support the Solomon Islands in training human resources and sharing socio-economic development experience.
The two PMs showed strong interest in enhancing cooperation on marine environment protection and sustainable development. PM Chinh underscored Vietnam’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 14 on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources, while offering to share Vietnam's experience in fisheries management and protection.
PM Manele praised Vietnam’s efforts in marine conservation and proposed expanding bilateral cooperation through information and technical exchange as well as mutual support for ocean- and marine-related initiatives.
The two leaders also compared notes on regional and international issues of mutual concern and agreed to step up coordination at regional and international forums, while supporting each other’s candidacies to international organizations.
