Flying high with VOV

VOVNews has confirmed its status as a prestigious online newspaper among the Vietnamese press.

The VOVNews website was officially launched on February 3, 1999, just one year after Vietnam had been connected to the internet.

During its initial period, the site had to update news in a manual way. Programmes were produced at 45 Ba Trieu, Hanoi, and then carried on floppy disks by motorbike to the technical department in 58 Quan Su to be posted online.

On February 16, the voice of President Tran Duc Luong was broadcast online during the Lunar New Year Eve. After this, VOVNews received an array of emails from radio listeners on the internet, especially Vietnamese expatriates.

Over the past few years, VOVNews has contributed to extending the coverage of VOV.

Its radio broadcasts for overseas Vietnamese began on July 10, 1999, have lived up to all the expectations of listeners on the internet.

In August 2005, VOVNews started streaming four VOV radio channels online: VOV1 (News), VOV2 (Social Affairs), VOV3 (Music) and VOV5 (International).

In 2004, VOVNews also started to upload video clips onto its website.

Xuan Qua, a Vietnamese expatriate from Canada, said emotionally that VOV and VOVNews were listened to or read by his family and other Vietnamese families abroad on a daily basis. The songs and music from VOVNews reminded them of past memories and consoled them when they were living far away from the homeland.

Over the past 11 years, VOVNews Online has done its best to disseminate information about Party and State policies in both Vietnamese and English on the Internet. The newspaper has covered every aspect of people’s daily life, political, economic, cultural and social, in the cause of national renewal and has greatly contributed to increasing international cooperation and mobilising support and assistance from the international community.

In addition to extending VOV’s coverage, VOVNews has made full use of its advantages as an online newspaper to develop VOV’s trademark in domestic media circles.

In the current age of information explosion, while facing fierce competition from other online newspapers, VOVNews has to cope with challenges posed by blogs and social networks, but still wins a large number of hits everyday thanks to its good virtues that other online newspapers do not have.

VOVNews has a very large data base of audio files of special programmes, such as poetry, stories and timeless songs performed by VOV artists.

The newspaper also provides the latest available information to all VOV channels, including the traffic information channel. As part of the VOV network - a leading media agency in Vietnam - VOVNews has attracted a large number of listeners and readers in the country as well as overseas thanks to its reliable and abundant content.

During its 11-year history, VOVNews has developed in both scope and scale. Its front page features and programmes have improved day by day to become more attractive, with the quality of articles steadily increasing. VOVNews always focuses on promoting its online exchanges and discussions with both listeners and readers to press home the advantages of a multi-media agency.

VOVNews has done all it can to ensure a firm position in the current competitive environment. Its columns, including events & comments, from villages to cities, written by VOV outstanding reporters, have become very popular with its readers which is VOVNews’ advantage over other online newspapers.

Recent developments in information technology (IT) have also helped VOVNews expand its use of IT which allows the newspaper to post its content on mobile networks. In the future, VOVNews will change its interfaces and broadcast live VOVTV programmes on its website.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the staff at VOVNews have constantly improved their knowledge and professional skills to become the vanguard of VOV - one of Vietnam’s leading media agencies.
