Five decades of Vietnam-Mozambique ties: Stronger cooperation ahead
VOV.VN - As Vietnam and Mozambique mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries are working to deepen cooperation across key areas, building on a relationship forged during their respective struggles for independence and strengthened through mutual trust.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Mozambique (25 June 1975 – 25 June 2025), Vietnamese Ambassador to Mozambique Tran Thi Thu Thin granted a media interview, highlighting major milestones in the bilateral ties and outlining future cooperation opportunities.
According to Ambassador Thin, over the past five decades, Vietnam and Mozambique have built a relationship grounded in mutual support and solidarity, forged during their respective struggles for independence and strengthened through ongoing efforts in national development. Bilateral ties have grown steadily across a variety of fields, notably politics, diplomacy, trade, investment, agriculture, and education.
In recent years, political relations have been reinforced through frequent delegation exchanges and high-level contacts across Party, State, Government, and National Assembly channels. Recent notable visits include those by Mozambican National Assembly President Esperanca Bias to Vietnam in 2022, Vietnamese Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan to Mozambique in 2023, and Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi to Vietnam in September 2024. Leaders of both sides have maintained close contact and extended congratulations and support during key milestones and major events.
In economic cooperation, two-way trade has remained stable, with Vietnam exporting over US$100 million annually to Mozambique, primarily rice and fertilizers. Mozambique, in turn, has emerged in recent years as a key coal supplier to Vietnam. On the investment front, the Viettel Group’s Movitel project in Mozambique has become a flagship model not only for bilateral cooperation but also for South-South cooperation. The venture has delivered substantive economic results while contributing to digital transformation, job creation, skills training, and the expansion of telecommunications services to remote areas.
Development cooperation has long been a key pillar. Since the 1980s, Vietnamese experts in healthcare, education, and agriculture have worked alongside Mozambican partners to support national reconstruction efforts.
More than 100 Mozambican students have studied in Vietnam under government scholarships in fields such as agriculture, aquaculture, traditional medicine, and maritime studies. From 2013 to 2017, a joint agricultural project introduced improved rice, soybean, and vegetable cultivation in central Mozambique, enhancing local productivity.
Ambassador Thin emphasized that these achievements stem from strong political will and enduring people-to-people ties. Shared trust, mutual understanding, and a deep sense of solidarity have underpinned the bilateral relationship.
Looking ahead, both countries are actively identifying new areas for cooperation, including agriculture, telecommunications, education, healthcare, energy, mining, and construction.
Mozambique’s abundant natural resources and strategic position in Southern Africa, combined with Vietnam’s dynamic development experience in poverty reduction, public health, rural development, and digital infrastructure, offer strong complementarities.
In agriculture, the Vietnameese diplomat noted the success of past joint projects provides a foundation for expanding cooperation to more provinces to promote food security and sustainable farming. In telecommunications and digital services, Movitel’s impact has demonstrated the potential of Vietnamese enterprises. Amid Mozambique’s push for digital transformation, Vietnamese firms can explore opportunities in digital finance, e-government, and online education.
She also highlighted opportunities in vocational training and medical cooperation, particularly public health and disease prevention. Mozambique values Vietnam’s development model and welcomes deeper co-operation in these areas. Defence and security, peacekeeping training, and cultural and tourism exchanges are also areas ripe for development.
At multilateral forums, the two countries share common positions in upholding international law, promoting peace, and advancing the voice of developing nations. Vietnam and Mozambique can continue coordinating closely at the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the G77, and other international mechanisms through mutual support and information sharing.
To mark the 50th anniversary, the two sides have worked hand in hand to organize commemorative events throughout 2025. Mozambique has sent two delegations to Vietnam to attend the 50th anniversary of Southern Liberation in April, while Vietnam dispatched a Party delegation to Maputo for Mozambique’s Independence Day celebrations.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Mozambique, in coordination with local agencies and partners, has hosted a friendship football tournament and is preparing a photo exhibition titled "Vietnam–Mozambique: 50 Years of Solidarity and Development" at Joaquim Chissano University on 26 June 2025.
A series of economic and investment promotion workshops is also being planned, including a high-level anniversary celebration in Maputo in July. These events are designed to strengthen bilateral relations, build trust, and expand sectoral cooperation.
To sustain momentum, Ambassador Thin recommended three key priorities, including strengthening political-diplomatic ties through regular high-level exchanges and cooperation mechanisms; boosting economic cooperatin through trade and investment promotion and replicating successful business models like Movitel; and expanding cooperation in agriculture, education, and healthcare to generate tangible benefits for both peoples.
With the legacy of five decades of friendship and the determination of leaders, businesses, and citizens from both countries, the Vietnamese diplomat expressed confidence that Vietnam and Mozambique can take their partnership to new heights, building a more substantive, effective, and forward-looking relationship in the years ahead.
