Estonia looks to augment digital cooperation with Vietnam

VOV.VN - Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna expressed his country’s desire to bolster cooperation with Vietnam in trade, investment and digital transformation during talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on June 6 in Tallinn.

The meeting took place as part of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to the Republic of Estonia.

Deputy PM Son thanked Minister Tsahkna and the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their thorough preparations and close coordination in organizing the Vietnamese Prime Minister’s first official visit to the country.

The two diplomats welcomed recent progress in bilateral ties, particularly following their meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2023.

Deputy PM Son affirmed Vietnam’s wish to expand cooperation across all fields, especially in e-government, digital governance, data center development and the application of information technology in public administration and socio-economic development.

For his part, Minister Tsahkna underscored the significance of Prime Minister Chinh’s visit, calling it an important milestone that will help further boost bilateral relations. He reiterated Estonia’s interest in closer ties with the Asia-Pacific, including Vietnam, and pledged to advocate for the early ratification of the EU–Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) by remaining EU member states. He also shared Estonia’s intention to step up cooperation with Vietnam in trade, investment and digital innovation.

Both sides consented to boost exchanges at all levels and welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two foreign ministries during the visit. They emphasized the importance of launching a political consultation mechanism, policy dialogues, and cooperation in digital technology with a view to developing a modern digital diplomacy framework.

The two ministers also agreed on the leading role of their ministries in helping realize the outcomes of Prime Minister Chinh’s visit.

They also exchanged views on regional and international matters of mutual concern. On maritime issues, both sides concurred to maintain consultations at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations, to contribute to peace, stability and sustainable development both regionally and globally. They reaffirmed their support for settling disputes through peaceful means, via dialogue and in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son invited Minister Tsahkna to visit Vietnam at an early date, with the invitation being graciously accepted.
