A Vietnamese delegation led by Vu Xuan Hong, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO), paid a working visit to the US from August 29 to September 5.

The visit aimed to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and the US through people-to-people diplomacy, non-governmental organisations, charities and development funds.

During the visit, the Vietnamese officials briefed their hosts on economic development situation in Vietnam and highlighted the priority given to person-to-person diplomacy. They also hoped to boost cooperation in development and humanitarian projects with their US counterparts in Vietnam.

While staying in Washington DC and New York, the Vietnamese delegation also worked with representatives from a number of non-governmental organisations and foundations, such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF), the Rockefeller Foundation and Save the Children US.

Both sides exchanged information about the global financial crisis and its effects on the US economy, as well as priority policies of these American foundations and non-governmental organisations in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese delegates called on these designated organisations to provide more assistance for Agent Orange victims and conduct further research on the tragic consequences of the toxic chemicals on the people and environment in Vietnam.
