VOV.VN - President of the European Council (EC) António Costa arrived in Hanoi on the evening of January 28 evening, starting his two-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of State President Luong Cuong.
Those welcoming the EC delegation at Noi Bai International Airport included Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Culture and Social Affairs Nguyen Dac Vinh, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong, Ambassador and Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the European Union (EU) Nguyen Van Thao, and EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier.
Accompanying EC President António Costa on the visit are Chief Foreign Policy Advisor of the EC President Anna-Maria Boura, Foreign Policy Adviser Veronika Şentürk Musilová, and Spokesperson of the President’s Office Maria Tomasik.
Speaking to the press in Brussels on the significance and expectations of the visit, Nguyen Van Thao, Ambassador and Head of Vietnam’s Mission to the European Union, said the official visit by the EC President is of considerable importance for Vietnam-EU relations.
He noted that the visit is particularly significant as it comes shortly after the successful conclusion of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and involves a senior EU leader at head-of-state level.
According to Ambassador Nguyen Van Thao, the visit provides an opportunity for leaders of both sides to hold in-depth discussions on specific and practical cooperation programmes, aimed at elevating Vietnam-EU relations to a new stage of development commensurate with the potential and development needs of both sides.
Meanwhile, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier said the visit comes at a time when Vietnam-EU relations have reached their most comprehensive and substantive stage in the region after a 35-year journey. He said cooperation between the two sides has reached a stage that could mark a “new era” in bilateral relations.
