Dong Thap province should try its best to reach or surpass all socio-economic development targets, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan during his New Year visit to the provincial Party Committee, administration and local people on February 11.

Last year, remarkable progress was made in socio-economic development in Dong Thap as business development programmes and action programmes were implemented, resulting in a year-on-year increase in Dong Thap’s provincial competitive index (PCI).

In 2008, Dong Thap took the lead in 3 out of 9 component indexes, enabling it to rank first in the Mekong Delta and fourth in the country in PCI.

In 2009, the province’s GDP reached VND12,700 billion, up 11 percent over 2008 while per capita income was estimated at VND7.6 million.

Mr Nhan praised provincial leaders’ efforts to boost socio-economic development and provide aid to the poor to help them enjoy a happy Tet. He also called on the province to enhance patriotic emulation movements, increase exemplary role models in production, develop human resources and ensure social welfare for poor households. During their visit, the Deputy PM and his delegation presented Tet gifts to families of social policy beneficiaries.
