Vietnam steps up fight against cybercrime to safeguard national cybersecurity
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called for urgent and comprehensive measures to prevent, deter, and neutralize cybercrime, stressing the need to firmly protect national cybersecurity, digital sovereignty, and public safety amid rising online threats.
At the first meeting of the National Cybersecurity Steering Committee in Hanoi on March 21, the Prime Minister underscored that combating cybercrime is now an urgent priority as risks in cyberspace continue to grow in both scale and complexity.
Reports presented at the meeting indicated that, despite notable progress, cybersecurity challenges remain significant. Risks related to information system vulnerabilities and personal data breaches persist at high levels, while cybercrime, particularly online fraud, continues to evolve in sophisticated ways.
Amid intensifying global competition in cyberspace and rapid technological advancements, especially in artificial intelligence, cyberspace is increasingly viewed as a strategic domain with direct implications for national sovereignty, security, and citizens’ daily lives.
In 2025, under the Government’s direction, Vietnam achieved important results in ensuring cybersecurity.
The legal and regulatory framework has been further improved, including proposed amendments to the Cybersecurity Law and the development of regulations on personal data protection. Inspection and monitoring mechanisms have been strengthened nationwide, while regular cyberattack response drills have been conducted.
Coordination among specialised forces has become more effective, contributing to the protection of critical information systems and national digital sovereignty. At the same time, technology enterprises have played a growing role in building a self-reliant cybersecurity ecosystem.
Facing emerging challenges, the Prime Minister called for synchronised solutions to combat cybercrime, with a focus on addressing root causes and conditions that enable violations.
He also emphasised the importance of raising public awareness, strengthening legal enforcement, and strictly handling violations in cyberspace, while recognising organisations and individuals that contribute positively to cybersecurity efforts.
A key priority is to continue refining the legal system on cybersecurity and data security, including the development of a data security law and guiding documents for implementing existing regulations.
Agencies were also tasked with streamlining organisational structures, ensuring seamless coordination across all levels, and establishing cybersecurity subcommittees within ministries, sectors, and localities.
The PM also stressed the need to develop high-quality human resources, foster cybersecurity expertise, and promote research and development of domestic cybersecurity products and services.
In parallel with domestic measures, he said, Vietnam should step up international cooperation in cybersecurity to enhance its capacity to protect national information systems. The country should leverage global partnerships to strengthen its role and position in the international cybersecurity landscape.
