Vietnam - From independence and freedom to aspiration for strength and prosperity

VOV.VN - “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” stands not only as a historical truth but also as a guiding thread throughout Vietnam’s national construction and defence.

This idea has been forged across generations, crystallising into a powerful spiritual force that contributed to pivotal milestones, most notably the Spring Victory of 1975, while continuing to illuminate the country’s path in a changing world, Dr. Bui Thi Hong Thuy (Faculty of Political Theory, Banking Academy of Vietnam) told VOV.VN.

The aspiration for independence and freedom as a driving force

Throughout Vietnam’s history, the aspiration for independence and freedom has persisted like an enduring flame. Dr. Thuy identified it as a sacred core value shaping national identity and sustaining resilience.

Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the thought of President Ho Chi Minh, this aspiration transformed into unwavering determination and a profound source of motivation, guiding the nation from colonial subjugation to sovereignty, and from division to reunification.

Following 1954, when the country was temporarily divided, the simultaneous implementation of two revolutionary strategies in the North and the South reflected strategic foresight. The North assumed the role of a strong rear base, while the South maintained steadfast resistance. In that context, the declaration “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” evolved beyond a slogan into a unifying call that mobilised nationwide solidarity.

Dr. Thuy emphasised that this aspiration generated extraordinary strength, enabling Vietnam to overcome immense challenges and achieve the historic victory in 1975. This triumph not only brought a prolonged war to an end but also ushered in a new era of peace, reunification, and national development.

Expanding meaning in the era of renewal

In peacetime, especially during the Đổi Mới (Renovation) period, the concepts of independence and freedom have deepened and broadened.

Dr. Thuy noted that independence today extends beyond liberation from domination; it now encompasses autonomy in development, policymaking, and international engagement. It involves safeguarding national sovereignty, building a self-reliant economy, mastering science and technology, and maintaining a development path aligned with Vietnam’s realities. Meanwhile, freedom evolves into the pursuit of a secure environment where individuals can grow holistically, innovate, and contribute meaningfully.

This expanded understanding has helped Vietnam strengthen its standing on the global stage, positioning the country as an active and responsible member of the international community. Achievements recorded over four decades of reform will certainly lay a solid foundation for Vietnam meet the goal of becoming a high-income, developed nation by 2045.

Strengthening internal capacity: The key to sustainable development

In an era of globalisation, the challenge no longer lies in choosing between independence and integration, but in harmonising both.

Dr. Thuy argued that modern independence should be understood as the capacity for self-determination within an interconnected and competitive world. At its core lies the development of strong national internal capacity.

A country can truly stand independent when it maintains control over fundamental pillars: institutions, knowledge and technology, human resource quality, economic resilience, cultural identity, and core values.

With sufficient internal strength, integration transforms from pressure into opportunity, expanding development space. Sustainable progress, therefore, requires a balanced approach, combining economic growth, social advancement, and environmental protection, with science, technology, and innovation playing central roles.

Young generation and the responsibility to continue history

In Vietnam’s development journey, the younger generation holds a particularly vital role. Dr. Thuy described them as dynamic, creative, ambitious, and highly adaptable to global changes.

To turn historical pride into meaningful action, young people need to recognise that history is not merely a record of the past but a source of inspiration and guidance for the present. Once these values are internalised, a stronger sense of responsibility and contribution naturally emerges.

In today’s context, active engagement in education, scientific research, entrepreneurship, innovation, and community initiatives represents the most practical way to “continue the story of peace.” A proactive mindset, readiness to overcome challenges, and persistent effort ultimately define genuine patriotism in the modern era.
