Hue to become centrally governed city as of January 1, 2025

VOV.VN - With a majority of votes in favour (458/461), the National Assembly of Vietnam on November 30 approved a resolution on the establishment of centrally-governed Hue city, starting from January 1, 2025.

The centrally run city will be based on the entire natural area of 4,947.11 km² and a population of 1,236,393 from Thua Thien Hue province.

The National Assembly has tasked the National Assembly Standing Committee with determining the arrangement and establishment of district and commune-level administrative units within Hue city, ensuring that these changes take effect simultaneously with the resolution. Agencies, organizations, and units whose names are tied to the province of Thua Thien Hue will be renamed to reflect the city’s new status.

The decision marks a significant change in the administrative structure and governance of Hue, positioning it to better leverage its cultural, economic, and political potential. It aims to enhance the development potential of the city, increase its administrative autonomy, and promote regional economic growth.

By becoming a centrally governed city, Hue will have a more direct connection to the central government, enabling it to better access resources and implement policies tailored to its local needs.

In the explanatory report, Chairman of the National Assembly Committee for Legal Affairs Hoang Thanh Tung, stated that, along with supporting the policy of establishing Hue as a centrally governed city, National Assembly deputies made several recommendations and proposals for Hue after it gets the new status. These include adding specific mechanisms and policies to promote the development of Hue, addressing issues such as budgeting, public investment, and responding to climate change challenges.

“The name Hue City has gathered all the historical, cultural, and traditional elements of the local area. It has become familiar and beloved by both domestic and international visitors, and is widely supported by voters and local residents,” said Tung.
