Dong Thap told to shift growth model toward processing industries and logistics

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has called on Dong Thap province to develop a new growth model based on science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, and processing industries in order to achieve higher economic growth targets in the coming years.

The request was made during the Prime Minister’s working session with the Standing Board of of Dong Thap’s Party Committee on May 27 regarding the province’s socio-economic development and future growth orientation.

According to local authorities, Dong Thap aims to achieve average GRDP growth of 9–9.5% annually during the 2026–2030 period and exceed 10% growth by 2030.

However, the Prime Minister noted that the province’s first-quarter growth in 2026 reached only 6.14%, lower than the national average and below expectations.

He said the province’s economic structure has shifted but has not yet kept pace with new development requirements, while slow public investment disbursement remained a bottleneck for several major projects.

Large infrastructure projects, including the Cao Lanh–An Huu Expressway and educational facilities in border areas, continue to face implementation delays.

The Government chief highlighted advantages Dong Thap holds following its merger with former Tien Giang province, and asked the province to urgently formulate a new growth scenario focused not only on speed but also on development quality and efficiency.

Under the proposed orientation, Dong Thap’s future growth model should be built on science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, and better utilisation of local competitive advantages.

One of the key priorities noted by the Prime Minister was the development of regional-scale processing industries and logistics systems.

Dong Thap was urged to establish agricultural and seafood processing centres along the Tien and Hau Rivers while developing major logistics hubs in areas such as Go Cong, Tan Phuoc, and Cao Lanh to enhance the value of agricultural supply chains across the Mekong Delta.

Regarding industrial development, the Prime Minister stressed that industrial park planning should be closely linked to actual efficiency. Industrial zones failing to meet occupancy requirements should be reviewed and adjusted to avoid inefficient resource allocation.

Alongside growth model reforms, Dong Thap was instructed to accelerate public investment disbursement and proactively reallocate capital from delayed projects to those with stronger implementation capacity.

The Government leader also asked local authorities to resolve obstacles facing stalled projects, speed up land clearance work, and accelerate key transport infrastructure projects in the province.

Regarding Dong Thap’s proposal for a freshwater transfer project through the Cho Gao Canal to support the Go Cong freshwater zone, the Prime Minister assigned relevant ministries to study feasible technical solutions for future implementation.

During the meeting, the operation of Vietnam’s new two-tier local government model was also discussed as a major administrative requirement for the coming period.

Dong Thap said it has completed a review and decentralisation of thousands of administrative tasks while restructuring the local apparatus to ensure uninterrupted governance after administrative reforms.

The Prime Minister requested the province to continue ensuring the smooth operation of the model and accelerate the restructuring of public service units in health care and education to improve efficiency and streamline operations.
