Vietnam supports peaceful settlement of Middle East conflict

VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son voiced Vietnam’s strong support for peaceful settlement of the prolonged Middle East conflict during his meeting with Riad Malki, Foreign Affairs Advisor and Special Envoy of the President of Palestine.

Meeting with Malki in Hanoi on December 25, Son recalled the long-standing friendship between the two countries, dating back to 1968, even before the two sides officially established diplomatic relations. In later years, Vietnam and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) supported each other in the struggle for national liberation and independence.

Emphasizing Vietnam’s strong commitment to strengthening friendship with its traditional friends, Palestine, Son shared the tremendous losses and challenges faced by Palestine and its people amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Vietnam believes that all parties concerned should immediately agree to a permanent ceasefire to protect civilians and civic infrastructure, as well as to ensure and enhance humanitarian aid activities to provide essential support to the Palestinian people, said the Deputy PM.

He reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of strongly supporting the two-state solution, including the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the borders prior to 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions.

Malki thanked Vietnam for its solidarity, unwavering support, and consistent position on the Palestinian people’s righteous struggle. He emphasized that Vietnam is an inspiration and a role model for Palestinians as they continue their fight for their inviolable rights, self-determination, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Malki also shared the enormous losses, challenges, and difficulties currently faced by Palestine, and expressed a desire for the international community, including Vietnam, to continue supporting and advancing peace efforts, resolving disputes through peaceful means, and increasing humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza.

Both sides also agreed to explore solutions to overcome challenges and promote cooperation in other potential areas such as trade, education, science - technology, and agriculture, while strengthening cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections. They agreed to continue implementing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including political consultations between the two foreign ministries, and advancing negotiations and the signing of agreements to facilitate cooperation between the two countries.

Son assured Vietnam’s readiness, within its capacity, to collaborate with the international community and contribute to humanitarian support efforts and capacity-building for Palestine.

Malki expressed his gratitude for Vietnam’s support and affirmed that there is much potential to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. He also pledged to actively coordinate and push forward the implementation of the outcomes agreed upon during the meeting.
