Vietnam seeks World Bank’s continued support for sustainable development goals
VOV.VN - Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan has expressed Vietnam’s desires to receive additional World Bank support to realise its sustainable development goals, including climate change response.

Receiving Mariam Sherman, the World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, in Hanoi on March 21, Hoan praised close cooperation between Vietnam and the WB over the years, believing that both sides would continue to strengthen their good partnership.
He said Vietnam places great importance on sustainable development and climate change response in an effort to fulfills its international commitments, including net zero emissions commitment by 2050.
He lauded the ongoing pilot project to develop 1 million ha of low-carbon, high-quality rice in the Mekong Delta by 2030, with assistance from the WB, saying this project aims to enhance the value of the rice sector, improve production efficiency and farmers' income, while also protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
At the meeting, the legislator also stated that Vietnam is actively streamlining its administrative apparatus, reforming institutions, fostering breakthroughs in science and technology, promoting innovation, and accelerating digital transformation. These efforts aim to unlock resources and create momentum for national development in the new era.
To undertake the tasks, he said, the National Assembly is making significant changes in legislative thinking, ensuring flexibility in the government’s administration to promptly adapt and respond to real-world situations.
The National Assembly Vice Chairman proposed accelerating and realizing the strategic cooperation framework between Vietnam and the WB, particularly in the agricultural sector, and supporting research quality improvement, institutional development, and policy formulation.
He also requested the WB to further collaborate effectively in implementing the pilot rice project, and at the same time called for flexibility in funding mechanisms and resources, positioning the project as a symbol of WB-Vietnam cooperation.
Sherman for her part expressed hope that the WB-Vietnam partnership would continue to be effective and achieve its set goals. She reaffirmed the WB’s commitment to implementing the agreed-upon cooperation agenda and programmes.
One of the top priorities is the successful implementation of the pilot rice project, she said, pledging to support other projects related to sustainable fisheries, green economic development, and emission reduction.
Sherman also reaffirmed that the WB is ready to support Vietnam by providing experts, policy research and advisory services, and capacity-building assistance, to help the country realise its development goals in the new era.
