Vietnam reaffirms United States as key partner in foreign policy
VOV.VN - Vietnam always considers the United States one of its important partners in ít foreign policy, Defence Minister Phan Van Giang told US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth during their short meeting in Singapore.

Meeting with the US defence leader on the sidelines of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue on May 31, General Giang expected that the two countries would continue strengthening cooperation on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, respect for international law, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political systems, contributing to maintaining security, peace, stability, and development in the region and around the world.
Giang emphasised that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence is ready to effectively implement the Vietnam – US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development between the two countries in the field of defence and security. He also expressed hope that the US and Vietnam would actively negotiate to soon reach mutually beneficial tariff policies.
According to the Vietnamese general, bilateral defence cooperation has been carried out based on the guidance of high-level leaders and signed documents and agreements. It has achieved practical results in several areas, including delegation exchanges, dialogue and consultation, war legacy remediation, training, and participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
He expressed his wish that the defence ministries of both countries would closely coordinate to carry out meaningful cooperative activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the normalisation of Vietnam - US relations this year.
On this occasion, Gen. Giang extended a formal invitation to Hegseth to visit Vietnam at the earliest convenient time.
For his part, Hegseth affirmed that the administration of US President Donald Trump highly values and prioritises its cooperative relationship with Vietnam. He said he hopes to further strengthen US–Vietnam relations in the near future, particularly in bilateral defence cooperation and in addressing war legacies.
