Vietnam reaffirms commitment to united, resilient ASEAN community
VOV.VN - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to building a united, resilient ASEAN community during a flag-raising ceremony held in Hanoi on August 8, marking the regional bloc's 58th founding anniversary.

The ceremony was attended by ambassadors and representatives from ASEAN embassies and partner countries in Hanoi, as well as officials from ministries and the Hanoi People’s Committee.
In his remarks, Vu emphasised that over its 58-year history, ASEAN has grown steadily to become a central force in regional processes, embodying a vision of a peaceful, stable, and prosperous community. He highlighted ASEAN’s image as a region of unity, harmony, and adaptability, reaching new horizons and expanding its influence across Asia, the Indo-Pacific, and globally.
He affirmed that Vietnam’s success in integration and development bears the imprint of ASEAN, and in turn, Vietnam has played an active role in the grouping’s collective achievements. The strong cooperative ties among ASEAN members serve as the foundation for a resilient and sustainable community moving forward.
Amid growing strategic competition among major powers, increasing non-traditional security threats, uneven global economic recovery, and declining trust among nations, he said, ASEAN and its development partners must continue promoting cooperation, dialogue, innovation, and adaptability while maintaining independence and self-reliance.
“Cooperation strengthens us, dialogue connects us, innovation drives us, and resilience defines us,” he said. “But above all, solidarity remains ASEAN’s most outstanding trait.”
He noted that ASEAN is now preparing for an important milestone in October 2025, when Timor-Leste will officially become ASEAN’s 11th member. Despite its small population, the country boasts a rich cultural heritage, strong spirit of independence, and economic potential that will contribute to ASEAN’s collective strength and voice.
The Deputy Minister also praised Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in 2025 under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, and affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to working closely with fellow member states and partners to advance regional priorities, shape ASEAN’s future, and promote an era of peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
