Vietnam ready to boost agricultural support and investment in Senegal

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to continue sending agricultural experts to Senegal to share development experience and support the country in ensuring food security through increasingly effective and innovative approaches.

Chinh was speaking during a meeting with Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in Tianjin, China, on June 25, on the sidelines of the 16th Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum that is getting underway there.

He spoke highly of the positive development of the traditional friendship and sound cooperation between Vietnam and Senegal over the years, noting that the two countries embrace the principle of ‘working together, benefiting together, and developing together’ in their cooperation.

As Vietnam has become an observer of the African Union (AU), Chinh proposed that Senegal serve as a bridge to help Vietnam strengthen its relations with African countries and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He also asked for continued support for Vietnamese citizens, workers, and people of Vietnamese origin living and working in Senegal.

Sonko, for his part, voiced his support for enhanced exchanges of delegations and people-to-people ties between the two countries. Senegal, he said, is ready to act as a connector to boost Vietnam’s relations with the AU and ECOWAS. He called on Vietnam to increase investment in the West African market, which comprises 400 million consumers.

Sonko also thanked Vietnam for its agricultural support, especially in rice and cashew production. He highly praised Vietnam’s successful agricultural cooperation models with other countries and expressed hope that such initiatives would be expanded to benefit Senegal and other countries in the Global South.

During the meeting, both PMs agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges and visits at all levels, boost trade and investment promotion activities, enhance business connections, and facilitate market access for each country’s key export products. They also emphasised the importance of cooperation in agriculture as seen in previous years.

On this occasion, Chinh conveyed a letter from President Luong Cuong inviting Senegalese President Ousmane Songko to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications Technologies for Criminal Purposes, to be held in Hanoi in October 2025.

He also extended an invitation to Sonko to visit Vietnam in the near future, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.
