Vietnam proposes gender equality, women’s empowerment initiatives at Beijing meeting
VOV.VN - Addressing the 2025 Global Leaders' Meeting on Women in Beijing, China, on October 13, a Vietnamese official highlighted the country’s achievements and putting forward concrete proposals to promote gender equality and empower women in the context of rapid global changes.

In her remarks, Nguyen Thi Tuyen, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women’s Union, emphasised that Vietnam has consistently prioritised gender equality in its national development agenda. Over the past three decades, the country has actively implemented commitments under the 1995 Beijing Declaration and various international human rights conventions, achieving notable progress in advancing women’s rights and participation.
According to her, Vietnamese women have made significant strides in science, technology, and leadership. Women now account for 44% of the scientific research workforce, and nearly 40% of those working in STEM-related fields. Women hold 30% of seats in the National Assembly, while over 28% of businesses nationwide are led by women. These achievements, she noted, reflect real and sustainable progress toward gender parity across multiple sectors.
Vietnam has also continued to strengthen its policy frameworks to support women’s full participation in political, economic, and social life. National strategies on science and technology, education, health care, and enterprise development have incorporated gender-sensitive approaches, ensuring that women are empowered to lead in innovation and economic transformation.
On the international stage, Vietnam has contributed actively to global gender equality efforts. The proportion of female officers in Vietnam’s peacekeeping missions currently stands at 14.4%, which is significantly higher than the global average. Vietnam has also played an active role in initiating and supporting gender equality initiatives within ASEAN and the United Nations.

At the meeting, Tuyen proposed several key measures to strengthen implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. She stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation, dialogue, and knowledge exchange to align actions in promoting gender equality, especially in response to rapidly changing global dynamics. She called on the international community to uphold peace and stability as foundational conditions for the full development and advancement of women.
Vietnam also expressed its desire to foster stronger collaboration in emerging fields, particularly by enhancing connections among women in science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Creating opportunities for women to lead in future-oriented sectors, she noted, is essential for building inclusive and resilient societies.
Concluding her remarks, Tuyen reaffirmed Vietnam’s belief that with unity, determination, and practical action, the international community will continue to realise the vision set forth in the Beijing Declaration towards a peaceful, sustainable world where all women and girls are respected, protected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
The high-level meeting brought together leaders of states and governments, along with representatives of women’s organisations from 110 countries, reaffirming global solidarity and commitment to advancing gender equality.
The October 13-14 meeting marks 30 years of the Fourth World Conference on Women of the United Nations held in Beijing in 1995. That historic event laid the groundwork for international efforts to promote women's rights and gender equality, culminating in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
