Vietnam promotes parliamentary diplomacy with partners at APF General Assembly

VOV.VN - Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Thanh held a series of bilateral meetings with parliamentary leaders of member states of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF) as part of her participation in the APF General Assembly in Paris, France, on July 12-13.

During her meetings with President of the French National Assembly Yael Braun-Pivet and President of the French Senate Gerard Larcher, Thanh highly valued the key role of the French Parliament in the APF and congratulated France on successfully hosting the APF-50 General Assembly. She emphasised the strong bilateral ties between Vietnam and France, especially following the elevation of relations in 2024, with France being the first EU member to establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam.

President Braun-Pivet commended the contributions of women parliamentarians, highlighting their role in promoting gender equality and sustainable development. She thanked the Vietnamese National Assembly for sending a high-level delegation to the APF General Assembly and recognised Vietnam’s active and meaningful participation in the APF as well as the Francophone community.

She also appreciated the strong inter-parliamentary ties through delegation exchanges and the activities of the Vietnam–France Parliamentary Friendship Group.

In her meeting with President of the National Assembly of Québec (Canada) and First Vice President of the APF, Nathalie Roy, Thanh praised Québec’s promotion of Francophone values, particularly the French language, and its contributions to the APF. She expressed her wish for continued collaboration to strengthen relations between Vietnam and Canada, especially with Québec.

Roy thanked the Vietnamese National Assembly and its Chairman Tran Thanh Man for the warm welcome she received during her January 2025 visit to Vietnam for the APF Executive Committee Meeting and the Francophone Parliamentary Forum. She expressed interest in further cooperation within the APF framework, especially in exchanges and sharing of experiences, with a focus on empowering women and female parliamentary leadership.

In a meeting with the First Vice President of the Cambodian Senate, both leaders expressed satisfaction over the growing solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia. They noted frequent high-level exchanges and close coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums in efforts to promote peace, development, and mutual initiatives.

During her meeting with Vice President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies and APF Budget Commissioner Mars Di Bartolomeo, Thanh expressed appreciation for his longstanding affection for Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh. She recalled his involvement as a young journalist in peace movements supporting Vietnam.

Di Bartolomeo reaffirmed his keen interest in Vietnam and commitment to promoting Vietnam–Luxembourg relations, including close coordination at multilateral platforms like the APF. He also expressed his desire to return to Vietnam soon, following his recent trip to Can Tho for the APF Executive Committee Meeting.

In additional meetings with the Chair of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee, the Chair of the Network of Women Parliamentarians, the Asia-Pacific regional representative, the Americas regional representative, and the APF Secretary General, Thanh applauded the active role of APF institutions in implementing the APF Strategic Framework. She also highlighted the value of thematic conferences and inter-parliamentary cooperation programmes, especially those focused on youth and women parliamentarians.
