Vietnam first introduces candidate for judge at ITLOS

VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son chaired a ceremony in Hanoi on May 29 to introduce Vietnam’s candidate for the position of Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026–2035 term.

In his remarks, Son highlighted the significance of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), often referred to as the “Constitution of the Oceans,” which serves as a comprehensive legal framework governing all sea-related activities. He also underscored the essential role of ITLOS in safeguarding the integrity of the Convention.

Vietnam’s decision to nominate a candidate to ITLOS for the first time reflects the country’s strong commitment to upholding international law and promoting multilateralism, showing its desire to be an active and responsible member of the international community. Importantly, the nomination also demonstrates the country’s efforts to advance gender equality and elevate the role of women in international institutions.

At the event, Vietnam’s nominated candidate, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, who is vice president of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, shared her vision, principles, and commitment to upholding the rule of law at sea, ensuring justice, and applying international law with impartiality and integrity.

The ceremony was attended by more than 80 ambassadors, heads of diplomatic missions, and representatives from foreign embassies in Hanoi, as well as relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies. International representatives expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s decision and recognised the qualifications and extensive experience of the Vietnamese candidate, wishing Vietnam success in this important nomination.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh is one of Vietnam’s leading experts in international law. She currently serves as an Arbitrator under Annex VII of UNCLOS and as Vice President of the Asian Society of International Law. She has conducted extensive research on maritime dispute settlement, regional maritime security, and the application of 1982 UNCLOS.

She is the author and co-author of numerous books and articles published in reputable international journals. In addition, she has substantial experience in both bilateral and multilateral affairs at Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
