Vietnam extends congratulations to new French PM Michel Barnier

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 7 sent a congratulatory message to Michel Barnier on his appointment as Prime Minister of France.

Barnier, 73, was appointed French PM by President Emmanuel Macron on September 5 to succeed Gabriel Attal, 34, ending more than 50 days of a caretaker government in France.

He is the oldest of the 26 prime ministers that have served modern France's Fifth Republic.

He has had a long political career in France and the EU, having served twice as European commissioner and, between 2016 and 2021, the chief EU negotiator for the UK's exit from the bloc.

Barnier will now have to survive a confidence vote in the lower house of the parliament.
