Vietnam examines preparations for APEC Summit 2027 hosting

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 3 chaired a Government meeting to examine preparations for hosting the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in 2027.

Phu Quoc city of Kien Giang province, southern Vietnam, has been designated by the Government to play host to the significant forum.

At the meeting, the leaders of Kien Giang province reported on the construction of basic infrastructure facilities in preparation for the event, including building waste treatment plants, wastewater treatment facilities, a clean water supply plant, and the expansion of Phu Quoc airport.

They proposed some special mechanisms aimed at speeding up these projects as there are nearly two years left till the hosting of the gathering and related events.

Participating delegates agreed that the infrastructure in Phu Quoc and Kien Giang is generally sufficient to meet the requirements for hosting the summit, but additional investment in some infrastructure projects is needed.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted the significance of the summit and required Kien Giang to balance time and tasks, clearly defining the scope of projects related to APEC.

Only projects directly serving APEC should be implemented, and they must respect the existing master plan, he said.

The Prime Minister assigned specific tasks to a number of Deputy Prime Ministers in charge of APEC conference organization, infrastructure investment and logistical support, and land use conversion and land management.

He also supported a proposal to build a convention center in Phu Quoc and suggested studying the construction of a museum and an exhibition center, among others.

The planning needs to be done carefully and specifically to ensure efficiency, avoid waste, and ensure long-term benefits, he reminded.

Established in November 1989, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation is an open economic forum aimed at promoting economic measures and boosting trade and investment among its member economies, while being open to all other countries and regions.

Currently, APEC has 21 members, covering about 52% of the world’s land area, 59% of the global population, 70% of natural resources, and contributing approximately 57% of the global GDP, and more than 50% of global trade.

Vietnam joined APEC in 1998 and it has so far hosted the APEC Summits twice – in 2006 and 2017.
