Vietnam elevates international profile at SPLOS 35 meeting in New York
VOV.VN - Vietnam has demonstrated its professionalism, proactiveness, and flexibility in chairing the 35th Meeting of States Parties to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), known as SPLOS 35, at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, from June 23 – 28.

The meeting comprising various panel discussions attracted the participation of representatives from 170 member countries, observer states, heads of agencies established under the Convention, and relevant international organisations.
According to Ambassador Do Hung Viet, head of the Permanent Vietnamese Mission to the United Nations, SPLOS is an important annual event of the UN, where member states conduct a comprehensive review of the implementation of UNCLOS. The Vietnamese delegation actively contributed to the meeting, presenting the country’s consistent views on key issues such as the peaceful settlement of international disputes, the submission of Vietnam’s extended continental shelf claim in the central area of the East Sea, and ongoing efforts to enhance international cooperation in the protection of oceans and seas.
This year, he said, Vietnam stressed the need for science-based approaches in the protection and sustainable development of the marine environment. This approach, which promotes the use of solid scientific and technological foundations, aims to ensure that countries, especially developing ones, can access the necessary technologies to effectively utilise marine resources.
Notably, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented a significant report on barriers, challenges, and solutions to promoting marine technology transfer to developing countries,. an initiative in line with Vietnam’s national policy outlined in Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation.
Chairng the SPLOS meeting for the first time underscored Vietnam’s growing capacity to lead and coordinate major international forums, and highlighting its responsible contributions to global maritime cooperation.
Vietnam’s performance received positive recognition from participating countries. A representative of the Laos mission to the UN praised Vietnam’s practical and effective contributions to SPLOS 35, expressing confidence that Vietnam’s success would not only help advance the implementation of UNCLOS but also further enhance the country’s international profile in ocean and maritime affairs.
