Vietnam calls for adaptation and cooperation in shifting global landscape

VOV.VN - Addressing a high-level session as part of the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels on October 9, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son called on the international community to pursue strategic adaptation and inclusive multilateralism in response to a rapidly evolving and unpredictable global environment.

Joined by international leaders including European Commissioner for International Partnerships Josef Sikela, Ghanaian Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Colombian Minister of Trade and Tourism Diana Marcela Morales Roja, US State Department Senior Advisor Massad Boulos, and European Investment Bank President Nadia Calvino, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised Vietnam’s commitment to peace, sustainable development, and responsible global integration.

In his remarks, Son identified five major transformations reshaping the global order. These include shifting power dynamics among major powers, the intensification of strategic competition, and the rise of non-traditional security challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and cybersecurity threats. He noted that the global economy is undergoing significant structural change, with a surge in protectionism and regionalised supply chains, while science and technology have emerged as decisive engines for green growth and sustainable development.

He warned that without effective governance, technological advancement could deepen global divides and erode national sovereignty.

Science and technology expand the space for cooperation but also intensify strategic competition and create new risks to national sovereignty if not properly managed, he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister further stressed that growing inequality, environmental degradation, and the widening technological gap are fueling instability and diminishing social trust around the world. Therefore, he said, each country must proactively adapt, turn challenges into opportunities, and contribute to building a more stable and inclusive international order.

From a regional perspective, he underlined that ASEAN’s strength lies in its unity in diversity, grounded in three core principles - inclusiveness, flexibility, and diversification. These values, he argued, have enabled the region to remain resilient amid global uncertainty and could serve as a model for peaceful and cooperative development in other parts of the world.

On Vietnam’s own response to global shifts, the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the country’s consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism, and diversification. Vietnam, he said, strives to be a trustworthy partner and a responsible member of the international community.

Vietnam is now prioritising green growth, digital transformation, and innovation as key drivers of future development. The country is actively diversifying its markets and deepening international integration, while expanding partnerships across all sectors and increasing resilience against global shocks.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted Vietnam’s significant investment in science and technology, including the identification of 11 strategic technologies to enhance national autonomy. These efforts are aligned with Vietnam’s strategic vision of becoming a modern industrialised nation by 2030 and a high-income, developed economy by 2045.

Concluding his remarks, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed Vietnam’s unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation, respect for international law, and the UN Charter. He emphasised Vietnam’s proactive role in peacekeeping, sustainable development, and safeguarding maritime and aviation security.

“Vietnam remains steadfast in maintaining strategic autonomy, acting responsibly, and engaging in practical cooperation with all partners,” he declared. “That is how we protect our national interests and contribute to a world of peace, stability, and prosperity.”

During the discussion, international speakers also shared their perspectives on the global situation, highlighting the urgent need to mitigate risks in economic and trade relations amid deepening globalisation.

The Global Gateway Forum serves as a strategic dialogue platform, bringing together leaders from governments, financial institutions, and international businesses to promote investment cooperation and sustainable development. The forum is a key initiative under the European Union’s Global Gateway Strategy, which aims to foster high-quality, inclusive, and resilient infrastructure partnerships around the world.
