Vietnam and Sri Lanka vow to create breakthroughs in bilateral cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam and visiting Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka expressed strong commitment to deepening and expanding bilateral ties, aiming to create breakthroughs in key areas of cooperation between the two countries, during their meeting in Hanoi on May 4.

Both sides emphasised the importance of the long-standing friendship and strategic trust built over 55 years of diplomatic relations. They agreed to strengthen political ties between the two ruling parties, enhance high-level and multilevel exchanges, and establish defence and security cooperation as a new pillar of the relationship.
The two leaders also agreed to foster economic, trade, and investment partnerships to respond effectively to global challenges. They consented to expand cooperation in agriculture, education, tourism, culture, religion, and people-to-people exchanges.
They stressed the importance of accelerating the opening of a direct air route between the two countries to boost trade and tourism cooperation.
Both sides also agreed to support each other at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and in South-South cooperation.
General Secretary To Lam congratulated the President and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Party, the core force of the ruling National People's Power (NPP), a left-wing political alliance in Sri Lanka, on their victory in the Sri Lankan general elections held at the end of 2024. He stated that the outcome reflected the strong trust of the Sri Lankan people in the JVP and in President Dissanayaka personally.
He expressed confidence that under the President’s leadership, Sri Lanka would achieve significant accomplishments in socio-economic development and national stability, and successfully realise its goal of becoming a developed country by 2048, marking the 100th anniversary of its founding, thereby enhancing its standing in the international community.
President Dissanayaka praised Vietnam's socio-economic development and expressed interest in learning from Vietnam's experience in governance, institutional reform, and anti-corruption. He invited the Vietnamese leader to visit Sri Lanka in the near future, which was accepted with pleasure.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to elevating bilateral relations to a new level for the benefit of their peoples and for regional peace and development.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka arrived in Hanoi on May 4 for a three-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Luong Cuong. During his stay, he will also attend the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City.
