Vietnam and Saudi Arabia expand security, law enforcement cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Saudi Arabia are moving to strengthen cooperation in security and law enforcement as senior officials from both countries discussed ways to deepen bilateral ties in Hanoi on May 13.

The discussion took place during a meeting between Minister of Public Security Luong Tam Quang and Saudi Arabia Ambassador to Vietnam Thamer Mohammed A. Algosaibi, who has recently begun his tenure in Vietnam.

Quang affirmed that Vietnam consistently regards Saudi Arabia as one of its most important partners in the Middle East.

He noted that bilateral relations have developed positively across multiple areas, including politics, diplomacy, trade, investment, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, particularly following official visits by the then Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Saudi Arabia in 2023 and 2024.

Both sides agreed that security and law enforcement cooperation is becoming an important pillar in bilateral relations.

They are currently working toward the early ratification and entry into force of an agreement on crime prevention and control, while also discussing future agreements on extradition, prisoner transfer, and cybersecurity cooperation.

Quang proposed strengthening delegation exchanges at all levels, enhancing information sharing, and increasing operational coordination in combating transnational crimes, including terrorism, cybercrime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and human trafficking.

He also proposed expanding cooperation in high-tech security industries and research and development of specialised technical equipment to support law enforcement and public security operations.

The two sides may also enhance training programmes, workshops, and thematic seminars for law enforcement personnel to improve professional capacity and operational effectiveness.

Beyond law enforcement cooperation, Minister Luong Tam Quang called for continued coordination in ensuring maritime and aviation security, as well as safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens living and working in Saudi Arabia.

Ambassador Thamer Mohammed A. Algosaibi expressed his commitment to strengthening coordination between relevant agencies of both countries, particularly between Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security and Saudi Arabian law enforcement bodies.

He emphasised that such efforts would help further deepen, substantively enhance, and make bilateral cooperation more effective in the coming period.
