Vietnam and Peru vow to strengthen all-round cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong and Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra discussed measures to ramp up cooperation in various fields between the two countries during their meeting on the sidelines of the 30th APEC Economic Leaders Meeting in San Francisco, USA, on November 17.

At the meeting, Thuong emphasized that Vietnam wishes to further strengthen the friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Peru, especially in politics - diplomacy, economy - trade - investment, culture, tourism, and people to - people exchanges.

He thanked the Peruvian Government for assisting Vietnam’s telecommunications and oil and gas projects to get underway, and expected that it would continue to create conditions for Vietnamese businesses to expand operations in Peru.

Boluarte acknowledged Thuong’s proposal and said that the two countries need to promote economic and trade cooperation commensurate with the increasingly good political and diplomatic relations.

She highly appreciated Vietnam’s cooperation projects that bring practical benefits for the two countries, and affirmed that the Peruvian Government always supports Vietnamese businesses in operating in the country.

To further strengthen bilateral relations and exchanges, Boluarte proposed that Vietnam consider opening its embassy in Lima capital and sign a visa exemption agreement for citizens of the two countries.

Welcoming Boluarte’s proposals, Thuong emphasized the need to increase visit exchanges between the two countries, effectively promote bilateral cooperation mechanisms, especially in the fields of economy - trade – investment, and fully tap into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

He also proposed that the two sides soon kick-start negotiations on the Investment Protection Agreement and the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, in order to facilitate economic and investment cooperation.

At the meeting, Boluarte respectfully invited Thuong to visit Peru and attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting 2024. She also affirmed that Peru would continue to coordinate effectively with Vietnam at the United Nations and international multilateral mechanisms, while promoting cooperation with ASEAN.

Thuong congratulated Peru on its role as the host of the 2024 APEC Summit Week, affirming that Vietnam would coordinate closely with Peru towards the success of the summit.
