Vice President receives Vietnamese-American astronaut Amanda Nguyen
VOV.VN - Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan on July 11 received Amanda Nguyen, social activist and the first Vietnamese-American woman who travelled into space.

Xuan praised Amanda Nguyen for becoming the first woman of Vietnamese descent to enter space, a testament to her spirit of exploration and determination to reach new heights. She emphasised that Amanda’s achievements are a powerful source of inspiration for Vietnamese women and youth.
The Vice President highly appreciated Amanda’s efforts in advocating for women's rights and her role in promoting the United Nations General Assembly’s 2022 resolution on the rights of survivors of sexual violence. She affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy to promote gender equality and create a safe, fair environment for women, while reiterated the country’s commitment to protecting women's legitimate rights, including those outlined in the UN resolution.
Highlighting Vietnam’s consistent policy towards overseas Vietnamese, considering them an inseparable part of the nation, Vice President Xuan expressed her delight at the success of the Vietnamese community in the United States, recognising their growing contributions to both local society and their homeland.
She encouraged Amanda to continue her role in fostering people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and the United States, especially as the two countries celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Amanda shared her deep pride in her Vietnamese roots, which she considers a source of strength behind her achievements. Reflecting on the profound experience of seeing Earth from space, she spoke about her love and sense of responsibility to protect humanity’s shared home with a special affection for Vietnam.
Addressing her advocacy against gender-based violence, Amanda thanked Vietnam for supporting the UN resolution and expressed her hope to continue receiving Vietnam’s support in this field.
Also during the reception, the Vice President shared Vietnam’s future socio-economic development goals, emphasising the country’s prioritisation of science, technology, and innovation as a national strategy.
In response, Amanda reaffirmed her deep personal connection to Vietnam and pledged to contribute to fostering US - Vietnam cooperation in science and technology, particularly in training high-quality human resources.
US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper, who attended the meeting, updated the Vice President on recent positive developments in bilateral relations, affirming the US’s support for Vietnam's development goals and commitment to continued cooperation.
Vice President Xuan welcomed the strong progress in bilateral ties and extended her congratulations to the Ambassador on the occasion of US Independence Day (July 4).
