UN archival display tells Vietnam’s engagement with global organisation
VOV.VN - Key staff from Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations recently toured a UN archival display of rare materials documenting the history of the UN and Vietnam’s journey to becoming an official member in 1977, at the UN Archives and Records Management Section in New York, USA.

The tour was part of a series of events celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, and 48 years of Vietnam–UN relations.
During the tour, UN archival experts presented a rich collection of documents, including original communications and official notes from the Government of Vietnam across different periods. The archival display vividly highlighted major milestones in the Vietnam–UN relationship, beginning with early interactions between President Ho Chi Minh and UN representatives in 1945, through landmark events such as the 1954 Geneva Agreement, the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, and Vietnam’s accession process to the United Nations.
A significant document on display was the official letter of application for UN membership signed by Prime Minister Pham Van Dong on August 10, 1976 that affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to fulfilling all obligations under the UN Charter. This was followed by Security Council Resolution 413 on July 20, 1977, that recommended Vietnam’s admission, and General Assembly Resolution A/RES/32/2 on September 20, 1977, that officially welcomed Vietnam as the 149th member of the United Nations.
In addition to highlighting historic moments, the archival display also showcased Vietnam’s efforts to overcome sanctions and isolation while actively pursuing global integration, with the UN playing a role in promoting dialogue and reconciliation.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, permanent representative of Vietnam to the United Nations emphasised the immense historical value of the newly presented materials, noting that they vividly capture Vietnam’s persistent efforts to overcome challenges and become a responsible, equal member of the international community.
On this occasion, the Ambassador reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law, and the UN Charter. Over the past 48 years, Vietnam’s cooperation with the United Nations has significantly contributed to safeguarding and advancing national interests, maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for development, promoting deep international integration, and enhancing the country’s global image and status.
The Ambassador expressed Vietnam’s continued support for the UN’s central role in global governance and tackling common global challenges, pledging that Vietnam will remain an active and increasingly substantive contributor to the organisation’s work moving forward.
