Top Lao leader Thongloun Sisoulith welcomes Party chief To Lam on State visit

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith of Laos hosted a welcoming ceremony for Party General Secretary To Lam of Vietnam and his entourage in Vientiane on December 1

The Lao leader invited the visiting Vietnamese leader to the podium of honour to render the flag salute and then reviewed the guard of honour of the Laos People’s Army.

During the Dec. 1-2 visit, Party General Secretary Lam will attend a grand ceremony celebrating 50 years of Laos’ National Day and co-chair a high-level meeting between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.

This marks General Secretary Lam’s first State visit to Laos and his participation in the 50th anniversary of Laos’ National Day. It also marks the first high-level meeting between the Politburos of Vietnam and Laos in Vientiane in nearly eight years.

The trip is of great significance ahead of the upcoming National Congresses of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, and the 2026 parliamentary elections.

2025 is also a milestone year for both countries, commemorating events such as the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, the 135th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Southern Vietnam and national reunification, the 70th anniversary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Laos, and the 105th birthday of President Kaysone Phomvihane. These milestones highlight not only the achievements of each country but also the enduring and exemplary relationship between Vietnam and Laos.

This visit underscores the commitment of both Parties and governments to continue nurturing and developing an exemplary bilateral relationship, contributing to peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region, in line with the long-held principle that “no force can divide the Vietnam–Laos friendship.”

Upon arrival in Vientiane, General Secretary Lam and his entourage also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Vientiane.
