Thai King and Queen pay respects to President Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi
VOV.VN - Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana on September 16 paid respects to President Ho Chi Minh and laid a wreath at the Monument to the Heroes and Martyrs in Hanoi during their State visit to Vietnam.
This marks the first State visit to Vietnam by a Thai King and Queen since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1976, and takes place as Vietnam and Thailand celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
It is also the first visit to Vietnam by King Maha Vajiralongkorn since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The visit comes after Vietnam and Thailand elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025.
A milestone in Vietnam-Thailand relations
During talks and meetings on September 15, Vietnamese leaders and the Thai King expressed their belief that the visit would help consolidate friendship, strengthen political trust and mutual understanding between the two peoples, and provide fresh momentum for the Vietnam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to develop in a deeper, more substantive and effective manner.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam underscored the special significance of the visit, which takes place as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and bilateral ties enter a new phase following their elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Thailand is currently Vietnam’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. Two-way trade reached US$22.1 billion in 2025, up 9% year on year, and exceeded US$15.03 billion in the first seven months of 2026, up 22% year on year.
The two countries also maintain close people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in education. More than 100,000 Vietnamese people live in Thailand, while around 2,000–3,000 Vietnamese students and researchers are currently studying and conducting research there.
